Marsh EMEA Power Forum 2010
Coal in the 21st Century: Reconciling economics and environment
Date: 6-7 October 2010
Venue: Istanbul
Marsh is pleased to announce that this year’s power and utilities industry forum will take place on the 6-7 October at the Hotel Ceylan Intercontinental, Istanbul, Turkey.
Coal fired power generation is expected to increase over the next 20 years in both absolute and relative terms. Rising electricity demand will out-strip new green and renewable energy capacity coming online in the medium-term. Yet coal fired power generation carries significant environmental risks, actual and perceived. How can the power industry begin to mitigate these issues? What new risks will arise, and how can they be managed? Will financiers focus on conventional or renewable power generation? What risk considerations will influence their choices?
Bringing together experts from the insurance market, risk managers, equipment manufacturers and power generators, the Marsh EMEA Power Forum 2010 will examine new and emerging coal technologies, renewable generation, innovation in transmission and distribution, as well as a review of market conditions, insurance market capacity and underwriting issues. Focusing on the wider strategic choices as well as risk and risk mitigation, the Forum will be of particular interest to corporate strategists, senior executives, chief risk officers, risk managers and insurance buyers.
Agenda in brief
Coal in action – view from the industry
Guest speakers from power equipment manufacturers and international power and utility companies discuss new and emerging technologies, the need for innovation and the development pipeline for coal powered generation. Coverage includes: 1) Super Critical and Ultra Super Critical technologies (USC) – increasing efficiency, reducing emissions; 2) carbon capture and storage – mitigating the greenhouse effect; and 3) clean combustion and flue gas scrubbing.
Power finance and insurance – two faces of risk management
Investment in power projects depends on many factors: business and financial model efficacy, a safe regulatory environment, continued demand for electricity and other factors. Effective risk management, including insurance, is an indispensable enabler every step of the way. How healthy is the power insurance market? What risks do financiers need to consider? How can those risks be managed?
Renewables – working to the same end
With international regulation continuing to drive the power industry towards a more balanced and responsible energy mix, countries – and therefore power and utility companies – have clear near and medium term renewable targets to meet. How close are we to seeing renewables take a significant role in the power generation mix?
Risk management – beyond insurance and the 360o view
Risk must be considered in every business decision. A well-executed risk management strategy will reduce volatility, optimise risk investment, ensure regulatory compliance, and reduce costs.
'Power finance: the multi-million dollar question'
This year the Forum will close with a live debate. After an exposition of financiers’ views of power investment drivers and selection requirements, teams will present the case for coal versus the case for renewable energy before opening the debate up to the floor. A lively exchange is most certainly guaranteed!
